Making Stuff Smarter
Materials are so important when you are designing and building. Check out the education and outreach materials on this Nova website. "Making Stuff: Smarter" looks at materials that respond to their environments and even learn, such as an airplane wing that changes shape as it flies. Scientists are turning to nature in developing such "smart" stuff. Sharkskin, for instance, has inspired a substance that, when sprayed in hospitals, could eliminate antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Rubber Band Contest (deadline in April)
Design and create a working invention that incorporates at least one rubber band.
Great Building Models
Print these out at home on thick paper, then cut them out and put them together. There are models of great buildings all over the world.
West Point Computer Bridge Design
The bridge design software is free to download and is loaded on my classroom computers. The contest runs from January to March but the bridge software is fun to play with whether or not you enter the contest. This contest is free to enter, and you can enter as many times as you like. You can work on your own or with a partner. Last year, two of my students placed in the local competition and attended an awards dinner in Boston. I suggest a lot of practice with the software, actually reading the instructions and faq's, and doing some research online about different styles of bridges. Our tech ed teacher knows a lot about bridges. I also have a bridge making kit to give you some hands-on experience.
College Architecture Course Video Lectures
