Dice Rolling Activity
Rolling Dice
Objective
To experiment with dice
To tally the results
Activator
What games do you play with dice? Do some numbers come up more often than others?
Mini Lesson
1. Roll 2 dice and add them up.
2. See how many times you can roll in 10 minutes. Keep a tally of your results. (How many times is 2 rolled? 3? 12? ... etc.)
3. Make sure to keep a proper tally.
Wrap-up
Everyone reports their results.
Which number comes up most often? Why?
________________
Probability
Objectives
To analyze the dice data.
To understand probability.
To reflect on the usefulness and pitfalls of simulations.
Activator
Look back at the classroom dice rolling data
Mini Lesson
Possible Rolls
Look at Ms C's Dice Probability Simulator
Discuss Probability
Student Engagement
Write: After experimenting with dice, explain...
1. What number is likely to be rolled most often and why.
2. What numbers are likely to be rolled least often and why.
3. Which did you like better: rolling the real dice, or rolling simulated dice? Why?
4. What did you learn that was surprising?
Wrap-up
How is the simulation better? different? worse? than rolling two dice?
Hand in your paper. Please make sure your name is on it.
Extension:
Remix a dice rolling project (It's in the Studio):
Add to it, make it more fun, make it more "you"!
