DESCRIPTION J.R.R. Tolkien is recognized as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century for his masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings (written during a period from the end of the thirties to the early fifties). In this class we will discuss major themes of the books; such as, community, heroism, revenge, and forgiveness. We will also complete an in-class project.

If a class is cancelled due to snow, tests, or for some other reason, we will still stick to the schedule. Everyone who reads the whole trilogy and attends regularly will receive an award for their efforts.

- Gain an appreciation for Tolkien’s depth of thought
- Learn how Tolkien drew many of his ideas from old myths
- Think and communicate critically about the books
- Learn new vocabulary
